If you follow me on Instagram, then you probably saw me share the boucle decorative pillows I bought from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I had been intrigued by the boucle trend for a while and wanted to try it out for myself. If you don’t know what boucle is, don’t worry (I didn’t either).
Essentially, it’s a fabric with curly texture comprised of looped yarn. You know how worn clothing pills? It basically looks like your pilli-est sweater on steroids. I don’t think the French would appreciate my comparison, but that’s my best way to describe it 😉 Yes, it’s a French word (so it’s actually spelt bouclé). I won’t be using the “proper” spelling for the sake of this blog post because 1) it’s pretentious and 2) it’s a bitch to continually copy and paste é, and I can’t figure out how to add the accent on my keyboard lol.

Now that you know what it is, let’s chat about whether or not the trend is here to stay!
Obviously I’m no design expert or trend predictor, but I do have some strong opinions that may help you decide whether or not to invest in the boucle trend or not. You probably have your own opinions as well. Boucle has a very distinct look, so people either hate it or love it. I happen to love it… in moderation.
So yes, I’m a supporter of the boucle trend. But do I think it’s here to stay? No. Here’s why: The key word you should be paying attention to is TREND. Trends, by their nature, are super popular but usually only last for a short period of time. Everyone is buying it, then we reach a lull when people inevitably get distracted by the next bright and shiny new thing to buy.
Don’t get me wrong, trends can be a fun way to freshen up your space and breathe new life into it. We’re constantly evolving, so our homes should too! If you want to try out the boucle trend, my advice is to start small. Buy accent pieces (i.e. pillows, ottomans, stools) that are easy to switch out. I bought my boucle pillows on sale during Nordstrom’s anniversary sale (ends tonight 8/8), and I’m in love with them. They satisfy my craving to try out the trend without going overboard. They’re reasonably priced and can easily be moved around my house if I’m looking to change things up. The best thing? I won’t feel guilty for storing them away if (when) the trend dies down because pillows are easily interchangeable!

What boucle pieces are not worth your investment? Large, expensive furniture pieces. As gorgeous as this boucle loveseat is from CB2, it’s absolutely not worth $1,099 of your hard earned money if there’s a possibility it will be “out of style” in a couple years or so. It’s unsustainable for both your wallet and the planet. Our large furniture pieces should last us YEARS, not one design cycle, so be sure to stick to classics that will always be in style.
I’m interested to hear your thoughts! Do you think boucle is trendy, or do you think it’s a classic? Is it hear to stay, or will it fade? Have you hopped on the boucle bandwagon yet, or is it not your thing? I’d love to know. Leave your comments below!
