Alas, I can finally make my return to the blog after what feels like a lifetime. I decided to take a hiatus earlier this year because I wanted to focus solely on my design studies. I had enrolled in The Interior Design Institute back in August 2021, but I found myself making little progress because I was getting sidetracked by the blog and my social channels. I felt as though I was burning the candle at both ends, and, as a result, everything suffered. I was half-assing the blog, I was half-assing my studies, and I was full-ass stressing.

As a type A+ perfectionist, I was embarrassed that I wasn’t giving my 100% to any one thing… so I quit (kinda). I took this much needed break from the blog, and I hunkered down on my course work to complete all twelve modules. It feels surreal to finally share that I graduated my online course with The Interior Design Institute! To celebrate my graduation and subsequent return to the blog, I felt that sharing my portfolio with you all was first on the agenda.

Obviously, this portfolio is an extremely condensed version of all my module assignments because 1) that’s too much to fit in one powerpoint and 2) none of you would read it 😉 It includes a floor plan remodel, electrical plan, paint schedule, sample and material boards, and elevation drawings for a ground floor remodel we were tasked with creating for a hypothetical family of four. This family initially had a closed off floor plan that wasn’t working for their entertainment needs (see below), so I knocked down some (imaginary) walls and completely reconfigured their floor plan to better suit their lifestyle.

Hypothetical family’s original floor plan

My portfolio also includes a glimpse at a (hypothetical) luxe study remodel for my boyfriend, who served as my client. For the assignment, we did an initial design consultation to determine budget and design direction, then I was tasked with completing a site analysis of the existing space so I could create a design brief, sample board, and quote for the client. I even had the opportunity to create and write up a fee contract. It felt like I had no idea what I was doing half the time, but that’s probably a good thing. I learned a lot, and now I’m in a better position to join a legitimate design firm or potentially start my own business in the future.

So go at it! I linked my portfolio below. Any feedback is welcome in the comment section 🙂 Also, if anyone is looking to hire your next junior interior designer, I’m definitely your girl.
